In an earlier post, I mentioned that filing a claim for UI benefits is a two step process. The first step is filing an Initial Claim, which notifies NHES and your former employer that you are intending to file a claim and the second step is to file Continued Claims, which are the actual request for UI benefits for each week. Both of these need to be completed before you receive and benefits from NHES. This is the same process you’ll use each and every time you become unemployed or your working hours are reduced. So, now to how to file your Initial Claim for Unemployment Insurance Benefits.
First you’ll want to figure out if you are eligible to file an Initial Claim and you can do this by having a look at my previous post on Preparing to File Your Initial Claim for NH Unemployment Insurance Benefits. You’ll also see a list of the information and documents you’ll need to file you claim.
Next, and assuming you think you are eligible, you should decide whether to file your new claim (or to reopen an existing one) online using the NHUIS, in person at one of the offices (click here to find NHES unemployment office locations in NH), or by calling the NHES Toll-free phone number (800) 266-2252 to speak to an NHES representative.
The easiest way to file your claim, assuming you access to the internet is to use the NHUIS. It is available 24/7 and you can go through the process on your own schedule – starting when you want or pausing to find paperwork or grab a cup of coffee – without worrying. You can find the secure NHUIS website is https://nhuis.nh.gov/claimant/ but you’ll want to read the rest of this post for tips and info before you head over to NHUIS.

If this is your FIRST TIME using the online NHUIS claimant process, you’ll need to register. It is a simple process that should only take a minute or two and will create an personal account for you within the NHUIS – you’ll be able to file your Initial Claim, reopen an existing claim, file your Continued Claims, file an Appeal, and correspond with NHES about your claims and appeal (if you’ve filed one).
Steps to Register with NHUIS and File Your Initial Claim
1. To register, simply go to https://nhuis.nh.gov/claimant/ and click on the Create New Account(Register) button on the top left of the screen (or on the bottom as there is another one down there).
2. The next screen asks you to continue in English or Spanish. Click the one you prefer
3. The next screen asks you for your personal information – name, address, SSN, etc. Go ahead and fill that in and click Next. At this point the NHUIS will give you a temporary password which will allow you to log in to the system the first time. You should write this down or print it so you’ll have it when you want to log into the NHUIS the first time. Click the which will take you back to the NHUIS main page.
4. You’ll see a link in the upper left titled Existing User Log-In. Click it and you’ll go to the Claimant Language Preference page like you did in step 2. Click your language preference and the next screen is the login page for NHUIS. Enter your SSN in the User Name and Re-Enter Your User Name boxes and then enter the temporary password you received in Step 3 above. You’ll have to enter it exactly as it is written as it is case sensitive. Click the Login button in the bottom left of the screen.
5. Once you log in, the system will ask you to change your password to something else – it has to be at least 6 characters long and should be something that is strong because it is equivalent to your legal signature so use a good combination of letters, numbers, symbols, cases, etc. so no one will be able to guess it. This will be your permanent password (unless you change it some other time). Enter the new password you chose in the two boxes.
If you have any problems with the Registration or Logging In the first time, either give NHES a call or go into an NHES office. You can also post a comment below and I’ll try to give you a hand. (Obviously, DO NOT post your SSN or password – you should never give out that information.)
Now comes the point to decide if you are going to file your Initial Claim. It is very important to think about this as when you file your claim can affect how much you get. Since it is some important and a little complicated, I’ll put up a post on When to File your Claim for NH Unemployment Insurance Benefits soon. Until then, feel free to leave a comment with any questions. For now though, let’s assume you are going to file your Initial Claim today… on to step 6.
6. Make sure you logged in properly and then click the link titled File a New Claim for Unemployment Benefits. The next screen will be the beginning of a series of pages to enter the information NHES needs to process your Initial Claim. You’ll find a series of questions about your employment history. Answer each applicable one honestly and accurately and then click Next to move on to the next page. When you’ve answered all of the questions, click to submit your Initial Claim for processing by the Benefit Adjudication Unit of NHES.
So you’ve now filed your Initial Claim for NH Unemployment Insurance Benefits using the NHUIS. In a later post I’ll talk about when happens next in the process and how, and when, to file your Continued Claims.
