Overview of NHES – Here To Help You!

The thought of losing your job, especially with the current economic situation, is probably enough to scare the pants off almost anyone. It happens, and many of us, probably most, never think about availableĀ  government resources until it does. The New Hampshire Employment Security (NHES) agency is the state resource for NH residents who have lost their jobs and need help.

The NHES is a state agency, funded by the Feds, and is made up of three bureaus – theĀ  Unemployment Compensation Bureau (UCB), the Employment Service Bureau and Operations (ESB), and Economic and Labor Market Information (ELMI) Bureau. The main goals of NHES are to manage the payment of Unemployment Compensation benefits and to collect the employer taxes used to pay those benefits (UCB), to operate a free job matching service and resource centers (ESB), and to provide the public with employment statistics and other information relevant to the state’s job market.

The main office of NHES is in Concord but NHES operates 12 other satellite offices all over the Granite State. Here is the contact information for the main office – even if you don’t live in Concord, they should be able to answer any of your questions:

New Hampshire Employment Security
32 South Main Street
Concord, NH 03301
Telephone: (603) 224-3311 or 1-800-852-3400
Fax: (603) 228-4145

I’ll post a link here to locations and address for all the NHES offices.

Generally, the offices are open 8-4.30 on weekdays, with a few of the smaller offices closing for the lunch hour. All of the offices are closed on the State and Federal Holidays, about 10 days per year. It might make sense to call the main office or your local office if you aren’t sure they’ll be open before making the trip. Their website is open 24/7.

While this site is mainly for workers, employers with questions specifically about the Unemployment Tax can contact the main office of NHES at (603) 228-4033 or 228-4034.

I’ll be focusing a lot on Unemployment Compensation Bureau and Unemployment Compensation benefits, this is what people are most interested in when they lose their job, but I’ll also talk in later posts about the other bureaus of NHES and the services they provide.
